General Catalyst was founded in 2000 by John Simon, Joel Cutler, David Fialkow, and David Orfao. Initially based out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, the firm has since expanded, opening offices in San Francisco, New York City, and Palo Alto. General Catalyst invests across all stages, and prides itself in playing an active role in mentoring business leaders and developing its portfolio companies.
General Catalyst invests across industries while maintaining a focus on health tech, announcing the $600 million Health Assurance Fund in 2021. The fund includes companies in both the private and public healthcare markets and is an extension of the firm's mission to help modernize the health care ecosystem. In 2020, General Catalyst announced that it had raised $2.3 billion across three new funds. Since the firm's founding, 20 of its portfolio companies have gone public through an IPO including Airbnb, HubSpot, Snap, and Vroom.
