Ripple (originally “OpenCoin”) was founded in 2012 by Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb. The company has not indicated any plans to pursue an IPO. In addition to its cryptocurrency XRP, Ripple developed and operates a global blockchain-based real-time financial settlement services network, allowing individuals to exchange money regardless of location or particular bank.
During its time as a private company, Ripple has raised nearly $100 million. Most recently in September 2016, the company raised $55 million from investors including 2020 Ventures, CME Ventures, Hinge Capital, Santander InnoVentures, and Seagate Venture Fund, valuing the company at just over $400 million.
