SharesPost’s 2017 Year-End Investor Survey

Highlights From SharesPost’s 2017 Year-End Investor Survey

We are pleased to announce the results of SharesPost’s second annual private tech investor sentiment survey. Predictions from our 2016 year-end survey were—unsurprisingly—mixed. We accurately predicted more IPOs, rising private company valuations, and a continued public market rally. However, results were mixed for specific sector-related and market-cap-related investor preferences.

For our second annual survey, we received more than 750 survey responses from accredited individual and institutional investors. Survey participants represented a wide range of private and public market investment styles. Although such surveys admittedly contain a degree of sampling bias, the results dovetailed with our 2016 year-end and 2017 mid-year survey results. In short, investors continue to be bullish about private tech investments in 2018.

Key highlights from the survey include:

  • Investors are more bullish on private tech valuations. Sixty-eight percent of surveyed investors believe that private company valuations will increase over the next twelve months, whereas only eleven percent believe valuations will decline. This bull-bear gap of fifty-seven points indicates a clear positive and compares favorably to our 2016 year-end results (where forty-nine percent of investors expected an increase and twenty-eight percent predicted a decrease). Accredited individual investors are marginally more bullish than institutional investors on the private tech market rally for 2018.
  • Positive sentiment toward private and small mid-cap companies. When asked to identify the asset categories with greater upside in 2018, fifty-nine percent of surveyed investors chose private tech companies, while only forty-nine percent expected public tech companies to deliver better returns. While large-cap public companies (e.g., FANG) and mega-unicorns like Uber continue to receive media and investor attention, we noticed that, heading into 2018, both cohorts of investors prefer small mid-cap companies.
  • Investors expect more unicorn IPOs in 2018 than in 2017. There were twelve unicorn or billiondollar IPOs in 2017, compared to roughly between eight and ten IPOs in 2015 and 2016 each. This uptick coincided with our observation from the 2016 year-end survey results. As the public market rally enters into its seventh year and the underlying positive fundamentals continue, investors believe the rally will continue into 2018. Over forty-five percent of polled investors believe that at least ten tech unicorns will go public in 2018—a significant increase compared to our 2016 survey results.

It should only be considered as a long-term investment. You must be prepared to withstand a total loss of your investment. Private company securities are also highly illiquid and there is no guarantee that a market will develop for such securities. Each investment also carries its own specific risks and you should complete your own independent due diligence regarding the investment, including obtaining additional information about the company, opinions, financial projections and legal or other investment advice.

Accordingly, investing in private company securities is appropriate only for those investors who can tolerate a high degree of risk and do not require a liquid investment.
